Games as National Art... Canadian Style

(Summary by Isaac Lenhart)

Is there a Canadian way of games?  The IGDA Montreal chapter was asked this very question by Raphael van Lierop, the founder and creative director of Hinterland, a games studio based out of Vancouver Island, B.C.  And for Raphael, the answer speaks not only as a direction for those participating in the Canadian games industry, but also as a deeply personal reflection on Canadian culture.

Roundtable Notes: Game History for Designers

  • Moderated by Jonathan Lessard, Concordia University
  • Notes by Nicholas Philip

The Notion of Game Literacy of Both Players & Designers

  • Can be a double edged sword
  • Block switch door puzzle from Zelda
    • Designers know it but new players might not know it
    • Need to teach new players progression such as tutorials for those who are not aware of
  • Good to understand basic games from Atari that are simple
  • Design elements are hard to explain to new players
  • Game literacy = game history
  • Consider that kids grow up in different gaming generations (i.e. NES, N64, PS1)
  • How will younger players respond to older generation games
  • Rise of classic games are reintroducing games from the past
    • with new features (e.g. Megaman 9 & 10)

Game Design as a Basis of Knowledge

Roundtable Notes: Demystifying the Canada Media Fund (CMF)

  • Astrid Rosemarin of Hololabs was moderating
  • Notes by Thiéry Adam, Ludia
  • We were lucky to get Stéphane Cosentino from Telefilm/CMF present to answer some of the questions.
  • The purpose of the CMF is to encourage innovative multimedia.
    • Convergence funding is for cross-over between traditional (TV) and digital (multimedia)
    • Experimental funding is for projects outside traditional TV and film (apps, web, games

Hawken: Transmedia Design in Action

By David Moss, Gamescribe.ca

If you can tell a coherent story simultaneously across multiple media, you’re well on your way to drawing in new players. And if you’re among the innovators who are already doing this, you’re part of the Transmedia Storytelling wave that’s sweeping our industry. That was the message delivered by Mark Long, CEO of Meteor Entertainment about his freemium PC game, Hawken, when he was key invited speaker at our Nov. 5 IGDA-Montreal meeting.

DemoNight 2014: Call for Demos

IGDA-Montreal is now making a call for game demos to be showcased at the "DemoNight" event set for January 28th at the SAT.

We are happy to accept game demos and prototypes from established game companies, indie developers and amateur/student efforts.

Please note the following basic rules:

  • Must be an unreleased game (but intended for release)
  • Can be on any platform, as long as you bring the tech to demo it on
  • Game must not be covered by NDA or restricted from public viewing
  • Games must playable/interactive and demo'd live on stage

Each game will be allocated a block of time (approx 5 minutes, depending on number of entries) to be demo'd and presented to the audience on the main stage.

Please email the chapter via montreal@igda.org your intention to demo your game. Your email should include the following:
