Candidate Statement and Q&A
Game development is a collaborative, iterative process, and so should building the Los Angeles game development community.
Los Angeles deserves an active IGDA chapter. I want to be a part of the effort to reunify and reenergize IGDA LA.
To foster growth, we must instill value in IGDA membership, increase visibility in Los Angeles.
Value comes from frequent events, quality programs and organizational partnerships.
The IGDA is a professional organization, and should be a source of professional development to highlight the creative, collaborative, innovative aspects of Los Angeles game developers.
IGDA LA should unite triple-A and indie developers, veterans and newcomers alike who share a common passion. Our community should be supportive and encouraging. Our community should share with and learn from each other.
Candidate Statement: Los Angeles is the epicenter of videogame production in the United States. We have developers of all stripes working on games of every description. All our members are unique but share much in common. IGDA Los Angeles provides an indispensable resource for everyone in the Los Angeles game development community. It’s a gathering place and point of unity beyond the boundaries of any one company or project. It’s an organization dedicated to improving the lives and careers of game developers, from experienced professionals to new hopefuls diving in for the first time. It increases the bonds of our community and reminds us we don’t live and work on unconnected islands. I've devoted a great deal of time and effort over the last three years to helping build this chapter into a strong organization dedicated to supporting the LA game development community. We've made great strides forward and there is still much to do.
I've served on the IGDA Los Angeles board since 2011 and would like to continue to be of service. Highlights of my tenure include organizing IGDA panels for Social Media Week and an upcoming Level Design tour of Disneyland. Moving forward, my ideal scenario would be to set up a recurring monthly meeting in the same venue, so that we can focus on creating great, free events for our members with speakers from the trenches of programming, animation, and indie development.
Statement of Tom Sloper
I am a longtime ardent supporter of the IGDA Los Angeles chapter. I participated in the "old" chapter's activities and attended planning meetings throughout the "reboot" process. The times I have missed events, it's because I was unable to attend due to my teaching schedule. I am especially interested in quality of life issues, equal opportunity issues, education, and public awareness, as evidenced by my column, "The Games Game," which has been published through the IGDA website for over ten years (http://www.igda.org/games-game), and my game career advice website (http://sloperama.com/advice.html).
Greetings, I'm Brandii Grace - a current member of the IGDA-LA board.
I'm a 2012 recipient of the IGDA's annual MVP award and 2003 IGDA scholarship recipient.
I've been a part of the IGDA for over a decade and part of the game industry as a professional designer, writer, programmer, producer, college instructor, and now a business owner as the Chief Creative Officer of Versus (a company creating free tools for game developers to add, and monetize, multiplayer tournaments). I'm also marrying a game programmer. My background gives me a uniquely robust perspective on the diverse needs of our membership.
WHAT I'VE ALREADY DONE FOR YOU
As a returning board member, here are some of the things I have already done to support our community:
* Built and led a strong volunteer network within our community.
* Helped the Writer's Guild of America to formally recognize and accept credits appropriate for game creators.
My name is Josh Green and I am a current member of the Board of Directors for the Los Angeles Chapter of the IGDA. While I have been a member of the IGDA since 2000, my journey with this Chapter began four years ago when a group of us decided that we would like to revive the LA Chapter. We felt that given how many game developers lived and worked in LA, it would be a huge loss not to have a Chapter here. So I worked with my colleagues to reestablish IGDA LA and helped to bring community and advocacy back to Los Angeles.
2013 IGDA LA Board of Directors Election
The 2013 Board of Directors election is now live. We are using the Condorcet Internet Voting Service to run the election. If you do not receive a ballot, then you are not on the chapter email list. If you are an active IGDA member from our chapter we can still add you to the election roles, simply send a note to firstname.lastname@example.org and we'll add you. Polls will remain open until September 7 at 11:59pm. Five new board members will be elected to 3-year terms. Per chapter bylaws those five members will then appoint two additional board members to serve 1-year terms. Jamison Selby and Sue Bohle from the current board will serve as poll supervisors. Voting is anonymous, though restricted to active IGDA members. The candidates were asked to submit a brief statement for distribution to the chapter. Those statements will also be posted on this site.
